The concepts of human psychology have deep roots in today’s culture. From lecture halls to prisons, counseling clinics to church pulpits, from talk shows to the tabloids at your grocery store, there is little doubt that the world has a deep interest in who we are, how we think, what triggers certain actions and how two children can come out of a near-identical environment and be poles apart in their values, reasoning and motivating life paths. Our purpose in writing Counseling Theory and the Scriptures is to provide the reader with guidelines that will be helpful in comparing some of the major counseling theories with what we believe the Scriptures present. We hope to provide a valuable resource for students, counselors and those exploring the differences and similarities between psychological theory and Scripture.

Volume I — The Basic Christianity Series is the result of a series of Christian tracts that were written to help new believers better understand the basics of our Christian faith. The tracts were designed as a series to provide sound teaching tools to those who disciple and mentor others in the faith. Each book contains ten brief but comprehensive lessons to help believers build a strong foundation in their daily walk with their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.Whether used in this book format or given to others in their original tract format, the purpose is to ground believers in the basic tenets of the doctrines and principles the God of the Bible would have His children receive, trust in, and rely on. All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right (2 Timothy 3:16, NLT).

The whole idea of marriage is pretty incredible. Two people, who are naturally driven by a large degree of self-centeredness, repeat some well-traveled vows, move into a home or apartment with distinct physical boundaries, and expect life to be a bed of roses. If this is your first, second, third, or fourth marriage, everything in this book still applies. Of the four recognized temperaments, two of those four help to explain why your perception of life’s challenges and rewards can be very different from others in your relationship circle. This little book will help you better understand why the small differences in how you and your loved one see many issues is a significant part of the very fabric of your lives.

Much of what you will read in these pages deals with our basic bent toward self-centeredness. It may cause some personal discomfort as we learn that God has given us the freedom to be selfish, but has also put in place a plan to pierce that selfishness. Call it brokenness, testing, trials, or suffering—it is God’s way to use the world, the flesh, and the devil to stir His stubborn children into the real freedom He provides to those who learn to live in the power of His truth and His ways.

Nearly all seminaries seem to avoid the basic distinction between spirit, soul, and body. Distinctions that the Apostle Paul and the writer of Hebrews clearly pointed out as an underlying force in our personal understanding of what God has done on our behalf, and how he is always pressing us forward toward maturity on the path of righteousness. This is not something that we must wait for in the age to come, but much of that completeness is for God’s people right now, today, as we rest in his faithfulness and promises of the wholeness that he has given his children for this life. We must learn to express our trust in God by releasing ourselves to follow through with the actions that are necessary to validate and express our true identity to the world around us.

As Christians, there are many forms of love that we experience in life. Agape love is the only form of love that is totally selfless! We know we are called to love others. How then do we learn to actively love others in our life to include those who come into our life for just the moment? How do we apply the examples given to us in the Scriptures as we learn to properly love those who make up our small area of planet earth? Love is more than feelings. Two experienced counselors offer insight to this challenging topic in this “Small Book Series.”

Christianity is a soul and spirit issue. The writer of Hebrews stated clearly that, “…the word of God is alive and powerful… cutting between soul and spirit… it exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.” In his letter to the Galatians, the Apostle Paul reminded us that, “A person’s selfish desires are set against the Spirit, and the Spirit is set against one’s selfish desires. They are opposed to each other…” Being conformed to the image of Christ requires a process of breaking us from our independent control issues and teaching us to rely on the guidance of our Father through His indwelling Spirit — the only one who always knows what is best for us. God’s magnificent intent in sending his son, Jesus Christ, to planet earth, was to bring life—Eternal Life—to a lost world. Jesus would give his Life to set right the death penalty that was placed on all human beings because of the original sin of Adam. Only then would God be justified to offer Eternal Life to those who, by faith, place their trust in the eternal plan of the one true God. The Bible is all about Life! The spiritual Life of God himself is a gift for those who believe. As Scripture tells us: “He who has the Son, by accepting Him as Lord and Savior, has the Life that is eternal; he who does not have the Son of God, by personal faith, does not have the Life that is eternal.” 1 John 5:12 AMP. This brief, easy-to-read book is a simple guide to understanding God’s perfect plan on how the reader can become a partaker of the Divine Life! (Part of the author’s “Small Book Series.”
